Stress-Proof Your Morning
By Anne Marie Parish, MA Health Educator
Everyone experiences stress through the course of the day. It is how you respond to stress that makes a difference. It is not so much reality...but your perception of reality that makes a difference in your life. Change your perception to become calm and relaxed at the beginning of each day.
To begin your day stress-free try these simple steps for the next week. Start your morning practicing these new healthy habits:
Wallow in a Water Massage.
Take a long, hot shower. The stream of warm water massages your back and neck muscles, helping you relax all over.Go for the Golden 20
Rise early to give yourself 20 minutes to meditate. Close your eyes and focus on a single word (calm/relax), a sound (rushing water), or image (clouds floating by).Have a Hearty Breakfast
To reduce your low-energy level at mid-morning and to be able to handle challenges make sure to break your fast. Some stress-fighting foods: glass of low-fat milk, bran muffin plus one piece of fresh fruit, or a whole wheat waffle topped with fruit and sour cream.Mind Your Minerals
Consider downing a multivitamin with a glass of orange juice. Stress can deplete your levels of magnesium, vitamin C and carotene.Commute Quietly
Turn off your car radio or listen to soothing classical music so you enjoy a peaceful ride. Arrive at your destination more relaxed and better able to handle whatever comes your way.
Now you are ready to handle any challenges that you may need to deal with today. After a week or two of practicing these new routines, you will have formed new healthy habits to start your day!
